Notes from the wilderness

Hello from the wilderness! We had an interesting buffet for dinner this evening, and we had a representative from the Lego company lead us in a storytelling with Legos activity. It was pretty cool.

The bugs are crazy out here! They are getting into everything! Please send us a care package of Raid!

In exciting news, today is the anniversary of the day my darling parents were wed! Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad! I love you both!

The Hope of Everyone...and me

Yesterday, one of the sumo participants named himself "The Hope of Everyone." Unfortunately, he did not last, as he was paired against a mountain of a man. Anyway, today The Hope of Everyone was on my same train! We had a good chat for part of the long journey.

Our usual midday train is broken, so the railroad company is running two local train cars hooked together. They are a little fancier than our usual local trains, but not by much.

As more people got on the train, more of my stuff migrated overhead. It didn't get completely crowded, though. Upgrading to the Super Kamui in Asahikawa was like moving into the lap of luxury. Comfy seats! Air conditioning! The Super Kamui is the middle pic, and the 4 hour train is on each end.

Tomorrow it's off to the wilderness for me. It's time for English camp!

Today was the Meirin Park Festival in Horonobe. My friend Tomoko and I went together and had a lot of fun. I loved hearing the Latin jazz band. But my favorite thing was definitely the sumo event. Six guys competed two at a time in a mini pool of slippery goo. Even the referee could barely keep his footing. A teacher at the junior high school in town was one of the competitors, and so was one of my high school students from another town. The guys in the picture are just random dudes.

When we got back to Wakkanai, we went to another local festival and hung out for a while. All in all, it was a good day of festivals!
